The latest follow-up to The Exorcist just got a major update. Confirmation has been given that the new film is currently being filmed. Horror maestro Mike Flanagan is taking up the helm as the director of The Exorcist, directing the film for Blumhouse. Flanagan took to his Instagram to announce filming, with a simple caption, saying, “day 1… here we go.” The post was completed with a clapboard for the film with upside-down crosses and green text, two staples of the Exorcist films.
As stated, Flanagan has already made a name for himself when it comes to horror. He’s written and directed multiple iconic horror features, including Oculus, Hush, and Doctor Sleep, and even directed the TV miniseries The Haunting Of Hill House. Screenrant also noted that Flanagan isn’t only directing The Exorcist, but he will be writing the screenplay and serving as a producer, as well. He’s doubled up on multiple of his projects before, being heavily involved in many aspects of the films as they’re in development.
Since its release in 1973, The Exorcist has been one of the highest-regarded staples of the horror genre. Based on the novel by William Peter Blatty, The Exorcist terrified audiences, gaining a reputation as a masterful standout of the genre, and would go on to spawn several sequels. Most recently, Blumhouse released The Exorcist: Believer from the Halloween duo David Gordon Green and Danny McBride, after securing the rights for the series in 2021.
