Focus Features has released the trailer for upcoming documentary, The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptismist. The documentary feature, directed by Daniel Roher and Charlie Tyrell, recently had its premiere at last month’s Sundance Film Festival and will also screen at the South by Southwest festival in March. It’s scheduled for theatrical release on March 27th. Oscar winning director, Daniel Kwan (Everything Everywhere All At Once), has also joined as producer on the picture.
The film uses interviews with experts on AI technology, including the CEOs of high ranking companies currently adopting the tech, to explore how AI can benefit society and may also lead to its imminent demise.
The further exploration of AI that this doc provides comes at a trying time for the tech in Hollywood. A video recently emerged on social media of an uncomfortably realistic AI generated fight scene StilAbetween Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. In addition, this week Warner Bros. joined Disney and Paramount in accusing internet technology company, ByteDance, of copyright infringement and filing a cease and desist order against them. ByteDance is accused of creating AI generated videos featuring characters owned by these studios. Actors, crew members, and others working in the entertainment industry view this AI generated content as a threat to their employment and livelihood. Producer Daniel Kwan followed the film’s premiere at Sundance Film Festival with a panel discussing the ethical and copyright implications of AI use in Hollywood.
This documentary will surely expand the discourse on AI upon its release.
