During an early commercial break shortly after the start of today’s Super Bowl, the trailer for Project Hail Mary was released (the title shown with triangles replacing the A’s).
As the trailer begins, a character played by Oscar-nominated Ryan Gosling appears to presumably be floating in a spaceship as a robotic voice seemingly coming from his vessel warns him of an incoming object.
A slower version of the love song, “I Would Die 4 U” by the legendary Prince plays in the background to hint at the level of dedication required to resolve the feeling of dread as the protagonist is shown in various perilous situations while venturing into the last frontier in an attempt to prevent the extinction of every living being on Earth – the latter being delivered to him by a female in authority amidst a group seemingly sheltered in a subterranean bunker, and a later mention by Grace about the sun dying.
During his mission in space, the main character named Grace (Ryan Gosling) encounters a creature that has a body that resembles round stones with a light orange hue (or even like an extraterrestrial crustacean) that mimics his movements and appears to befriend it then bond with it, to the point where Gosling’s avatar creates a voice with technology that allows the creature to communicate with him. Eventually, the creature vows to not let him die, as Earth repeatedly appears onscreen as a green planet instead of blue.
This story comes from a novel by the same author that wrote The Martian, Andy Weir and Oscar-winning Spider-Verse creators filmmakers, Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (21 & 22 Jump Street, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs). This movie is to be distributed by Amazon MGM Studios, see the trailer below:
