2025 saw Kathryn Bigelow return to the directors chair with A House Of Dynamite, her first feature film in close to a decade. Although the film has taken on a decisive nature, especially in terms of execution, one iconic director has spoken up about his stance on the film, specifically regarding the direction of the resolution.
A House Of Dynamite lives up to its title as the US government uncovers a plot that could destroy the stability of the country as they know it. The President of the United States, along with his myriad of advisors, are faced with a missile launched against them from an unknown source, resulting in a race against time to figure out where it came from and how to stop it.
With Bigelow at the helm, a script written by Noah Oppenheim, and lead actors Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson, the film’s conclusion managed to divide audiences right down the middle. Rather than show the outcome of if the missile was able to be stopped or not, the film opted for an ambiguous ending, leaving the threads open-ended for interpretation. While many didn’t like the ending, James Cameron himself, director of Avatar: Fire And Ash, came forward and shared his own praise on the note that the story left off on.
“The point is: From the moment the scenario began at minute zero when the missile was launched and detected, the outcome already sucked. There was no good outcome, and the movie spent two hours showing you there is no good outcome,” Cameron told Hollywood Reporter.
Although Bigelow and Cameron were married, with it ending in divorce, the two stayed on friendly terms, with Hollywood Reporter even noting that the two discussed the film during dinner.
Cameron continued his thoughts by bringing up 1983’s War Games, a film where a young computer prodigy helps to avoid nuclear disaster. He mentioned the ending of the film, explaining “as the computer says at the end of War Games — ‘The only way to win is not to play.’”
