As the Golden Globes nominations were released today, Wicked fans seem to be a mixed bag of reaction, as while the film was snubbed from a certain nomination, the franchise’s two leads, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, certainly weren’t.
Today, Erivo and Grande made Golden Globes history as the first two actors starring in the same film to be nominated twice for their roles as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. Ervio’s nomination also holds another layer of significance as she is the first black woman to hold two Best Lead Performance by an Actress in a Musical or Comedy nominations at the Golden Globes. Besides Ervio, only 12 black actresses have been nominated for a Golden Globe in Musical/Comedy, and only 1 has won, Angela Bassett for her role as Tina Turner in 1994’s What’s Love Got to Do With It.
Comparing Wicked: For Good’s nominations to its predecessor, there is a clear category that is missing from this year’s list: Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture. With nominations such as Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon and Nouvelle Vague, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice, being out the box office hit. This year, Wicked: For Good has two additional nominations, both in the category of Best Original Song. The two recognized from the feature film only are “No Place Like Home,” performed by Erivo, and “The Girl in the Bubble,” performed by Grande.
Despite the franchise being a box-office hit, both movies grossed approximately 387 million worldwide in their opening weekend, and the franchise has only brought home one award from the 2025 Golden Globes in the category of Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Fans can only wait with bated breath to see Ervio and Grande continue to make more history at this year’s Golden Globes on January 11th.
Wicked: For Good is available in theaters now.
