Colman Domingo has been announced to be the voice of the Cowardly Lion for Wicked: For Good.
The big news was shared Monday via Domingo’s and the film’s instagram accounts. Last week, director Jon M. Chu sparked rumors after he revealed a “big-name actor” to voice the legendary role. Domingo joins an already star-studded ensemble, with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande set to reprise their roles as Elphaba “The Wicked Witch of the West” and Glinda “Glinda the Good” respectively. Other actors set to reprise their roles include Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as Wizard of Oz, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Ethan Slater as Boq, Michelle Yeoh as Made Morrible, and Peter Dinklage as Doctor Dillamond. The Cowardly Lion has been the first character of the original The Wizard of Oz to be introduced in the Wicked sequel, with Dorothy, Tin Man, and Scarecrow’s appearances have been teased. Still, no casting for those roles have been announced.
Wicked: For Good is adapted after the second act of the original Broadway musical and sees Elphaba grappling with “her identity as the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’”. At the same time, the Wizard of Oz has named Glinda “the nation’s defender against Elphaba,” now “the two witches must make decisions that seal their fates.” This final installment arrives in theaters on November 21st of this year.
