Production on the upcoming film I Play Rocky is gradually picking up steam. One of the key players of the film, Stephen James, has just been cast to play Carl Weathers. Carl Weathers was one of the most important actors of the Rocky franchise. He played Rocky’s larger than life opponent in the first film, Apollo Creed, and became almost as iconic as the Italian Stallion himself. Weathers would return as Creed all the way up until Rocky IV, and went from being the rival that Rocky wanted to just go the distance with, to one of Balboa’s closest friends.
Much like Weathers, who appeared in Predator and The Mandalorian, James himself boasts a fairly extensive résumé. He’s had roles in several acclaimed movies including Selma and If Beale Street Could Talk. He’s also appeared in Babes, 21 Bridges, and even Malcolm Washington’s The Piano Lesson.
When it comes to I Play Rocky, Collider noted that the name itself shows that it’s less about Rocky himself, but more about the making of the film. Although it became an instant classic, even winning Best Picture at the 49th Academy Awards, it also became a shining example of a difficult production resulting in a phenomenon. I Play Rocky hones in on Sylvester Stallone doing what he can to get the story told, and the long road to getting the film to theaters.
