Robert John Burke, Simone Kessell, and David Wenham are set to hit the seas as they join the cast of the Amazon MGM Studios’ submarine thriller Subversion, which will star Chris Hemsworth along with Lily James and Michael Peña.
German filmmaker Patrick Vollrath, known for his debut film 7500, will direct the feature, with a script by Andrew Ferguson, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura is named as a producer. Greg Cohen and Stephen Shafer will be executive producers under the Di Bonventura Pictures banner. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will focus on “a formerly respected naval commander (Hemsworth) who is blackmailed into piloting a submarine loaded with illegal cargo across international waters.” It is also confirmed that the role James plays will be “a Coast Guard officer in hot pursuit of the vessel.”
Burke’s most recent roles include 2023’s film Boston Strangler and HBO’s TV series adaptation, The Last of Us. He also has an upcoming role in an untitled Alejandro G. Iñárritu film, which will star Tom Cruise. Kessell’s recent credits include Adult Lottie in Showtime’s Yellowjackets and 2024’s revenge-thriller film Hard Home. She can be seen next in the upcoming Apple TV+ series The Last Frontier alongside Jason Clarke. Wenham’s extensive film credits include Moulin Rouge!, The Lord of the Rings, Van Helsing, and Elvis.
No release date has been announced yet, but the question should be answered soon when filming wraps or earlier.
