Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reunite on the big screen twenty-two years after starring in the adored Disney comedy, Freaky Friday.
The sequel, Freakier Friday, sees the duo return to their mother and daughter characters, Tess and Anna Coleman, who accidentally swap bodies in the original, though from the trailer and plot details, Tess and Anna might be in for a wild ride once again. Lohan spoke on the difference between this film and the previous one at Tuesday’s LA premiere, commenting that this sequel is “bigger; we have more stories to tell.” She also confirmed that “it’s a four-way swap” this time around with even more music and physical comedy, which Lohan says that she loves: “Any moment that I can pull a Lucille Ball, I’m down for it.”
Lohan and Curtis, in their respective interviews, talked about their close relationship since working on the first film together when Lohan was fifteen. Lohan revealed that Curtis “was there for me at a time of my life when my mom was busy with my siblings,” going further to explain, “She was kind of like another mother figure to me out here in L.A.…We’ve always just been in contact.” Curtis described meeting Lohan from day one and saying to her, “I want nothing from you except your own peace and serenity. And I am safe; I’m home-based. I don’t want anything; I’m not going to ask you to come to anything.” Curtis added that she never wanted Lohan to “feel transactional with me” and just to “feel love.” Additionally, Lohan had two more supporters on the red carpet, her Parent Trap co-stars Elaine Hendrix and Lisa Ann Walter.
This feature is Lohan’s first appearance back on the big screen in several years, with her Hollywood return coming in the form of several Netflix romantic comedies and a cameo in 2024’s Mean Girls. For her future endeavors, Lohan is currently “doing a TV show with Hulu that I’m really excited about.” The former child also stated that she’d “like to take on some more serious, dramatic roles.” Lohan adds, “I love doing romantic comedy because that’s where my home is, and I feel like where my fans want to see me, but I’d like to take on some things that are different; maybe find something that’s an action-packed film. Just really show people a different side of me.”
Freakier Friday will also see the return of Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Ryan Malgarini, Rosalind Chao, and Stephen Tobolowsky. With new additions to the ensemble, including Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. The sequel is set to release in theaters on August 8th.
