Jonathan Entwistle directs Legends, which stars Ben Wang as a young karate student learning from Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han. The trailer shows Mr. Han looking for Daniel LaRusso, played by Ralph Macchio, to instruct Ben Wang’s character Li Fong after entering a karate competition.
Macchio and Jackie are reprising their roles in their respective Karate Kid films. Macchio is the star of the original trilogy and Netflix revival Cobra Kai. Chan played Jaden Smith’s karate sensei in the 2010 Karate Kid movie. Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, Ming-Na Wen, Aramis Knight, and Wyatt Oleff are also set to appear in the film. The script is from Rob Lieber.
Karate Kid was a hit in 1984 starring Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, a regular kid from New Jersey who moved to San Fernando Valley with his mom. With Instruction from Mr. Miyagi, he becomes a karate champion. Two more films followed Daniel and Mr. Miyagi, and there was a fourth film starring Hilary Swank.
Cobra Kai premiered in 2018 on YouTube Red and later moved to Netflix, where it became one of the streaming apps’ top shows. The final episodes of the 6th and final season are set to release in February.
The film is produced by Karen Rosenfelt. Jenny Hinkey and Macchio are executive producers. The film arrives from Columbia and Sony on May 30.
