While Wicked and Gladiator II begin their conquest of the box office, one holdover title continues to make waves. Weeks after its release, The Wild Robot is still climbing the box office ranks of animated staples.
The Wild Robot follows a robot designed for subservience, stranded on a remote island surrounded only by wildlife. As its programming is put to the test, the robot begins to acclimate to its environment, experiencing the world and Mother Nature in ways it never had the chance to before.
After last weekend, The Wild Robot has reached a domestic total of approximately $140.7 million. According to Deadline, the film brought in roughly $2 million over the weekend, despite steep competition from newcomers Wicked and Gladiator II.
Despite increased competition and a growing weekend-to-weekend drop-off, The Wild Robot managed to climb higher in the box office rankings, surpassing other animated films.
Screenrant reports that The Wild Robot currently sits just shy of the domestic totals for Pocahontas ($141.6 million), The Jungle Book ($141.8 million) and Lilo & Stitch ($145.8 million).
Among those films, The Wild Robot director Chris Sanders also directed Lilo & Stitch, alongside Dean DeBlois. The duo also wrote and directed the How to Train Your Dragon series.
