Mindy Kaling has joined the live-action short Anuja as a producer following the project’s successful festival run. The film was developed by director Adam J. Graves and producer Suchitra Mattai.
The Oscar-qualifying film follows a talented 9-year-old girl who works in a garment factory in New Delhi, India. She stumbles upon a life-changing opportunity to attend school, altering the future for herself and her sister.
Kaling spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about her excitement for the film, stating, “My favorite film of the year is Anuja, the story of an extraordinary nine-year-old Indian girl and her sister. The genius filmmakers Adam J. Graves and Suchitra Mattai have created something so special, and I’m honored to join as a producer.”
Kaling is best known for her portrayal of Kelly Kapoor in The Office and for creating and starring in The Mindy Project. Her notable work as a producer includes Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls.
Mattai also commented on the collaboration, saying, “We are truly humbled by Mindy’s belief in the power of this story, and we can’t imagine a better partner to help carry Anuja forward.” Director Graves added, “We know that her own inspiring voice will help amplify the issues surrounding child labor and girls’ education and empower the film to make a more significant impact.”
In October, Indian producer Guneet Monga Kapoor joined the production team. The cast features Indian actor Nagesh Bhonsle, internationally known for his role in Hotel Mumbai. Additional producers include Krushan Naik, Aaron Kopp and Alexandra Blaney.
