“He is coming.”
The official trailer for Robert Eggers’ third film, the gothic horror Nosferatu has been released, giving us a closer look at the darkness to be inflicted on a small 19th-century German town.
The trailer features a ghastly Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, a young woman plagued by visions of a dark presence. She recounts her dreams to her husband Thomas and the professor Albin Von Franz, played by Nicholas Hoult and Willem Dafoe, respectively. The latter having previously worked with Eggers on his last two films The Lighthouse and The Northman. The looming presence is none other than Count Orlok himself, the titular vampire played by renowned genre actor Bill Skarsgard, and is described by Dafoe’s character as a creature “more powerful than evil.”
Rounding out appearances in the trailer are Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin, as well as a look at a classic in the monster movie genre: a fired-up Transylvanian mob. By the end of the trailer, Depp’s character comes face-to- shadowy-face with the vampire.
Nosferatu is a remake of the 1922 silent film of the same name, which itself is a loose adaptation of Bram Stroker’s iconic 1827 novel Dracula. Coming just over a century later, Eggers has previously described the film as a passion project, first announcing his intent to make the film in 2015, and undergoing several casting changes since then.
The film’s distributor Focus Features has released the following premise ahead of its release:
“Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.”
Nosferatu arrives in theaters on Christmas Day 2024. Watch the official trailer here.
