French production and sales company mk2 films has signed a multi-year financing agreement with Finnish private equity fund IPR.VC. The deal, announced Thursday, will provide funding for a series of new projects, further supporting mk2’s recent successes in the international film market.
Mk2 films has established itself as a key player in global cinema, co-producing notable films such as The Worst Person in the World by Joachim Trier, Portrait of a Lady on Fire by Céline Sciamma and the Oscar-winning Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet. The company also handled worldwide sales for Molly Manning Walker’s How to Have Sex.
This financing partnership arrives at a pivotal time for mk2, which recently unveiled its most ambitious slate of projects at the Cannes Film Festival. Among the upcoming titles are Belly of the Beast, Alpha Gang featuring Cate Blanchett, and Sentimental Value by Trier, starring Renate Reinsve, Elle Fanning and Stellan Skarsgård. Other notable films in production include Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent and The Thing With Feathers, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
As mk2 expands its focus to include more English-language films, the company recently appointed former Protagonist Pictures managing director Vanessa Saal to lead its U.K. expansion.
The deal with IPR.VC reinforces the Finnish venture capital group’s presence in auteur-driven cinema. The Helsinki and London-based fund has raised over $200 million, partnering with leading production companies such as A24 and XYZ Films. IPR.VC has backed projects including Civil War, MaXXXine, Blackberry and Beau is Afraid.
Mk2 CEO Nathanael Karmitz and managing director Fionnuala Jamison stated that the new funding will help mk2 scale up while maintaining its dedication to bold and artistic filmmaking.
