Indie studio powerhouse A24 is back with their latest horror flick Heretic, starring Hugh Grant, and early reviews are calling him “wildly wicked” with a performance more chilling than ever seen before.
With genre-defying successes like Talk To Me, Midsommar, and Hereditary already under A24’s belt, Heretic is sure to be on the radars of horror fans in search of a new thrill. The film also stars Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher, the latter which was last seen in the A24 produced MaXXXine earlier this summer. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods head Heretic‘s creative team as co-writers and directors.
Heretic‘s newest trailer is eerily set to The Hollies 1974 track “The Air That I Breathe” and features encouraging reviews at the forefront, with puzzling images from the film teased sparingly behind. A presumably harmless Grant is shown as a careful, crafty middle-aged homemaker who welcomes two young female Mormon missionaries into his home. Unbeknownst to girls is the terror he’s meticulously planned for them behind closed doors, leading to a deadly game of cat-and-mouse as they are forced to prove their faith, A24 teases.
The premise makes for a hopeful thrill ride set against a religious backdrop. Religion themed horror has already made an impact in 2024, with Heretic coming off the heels of the hellish nightmares Immaculate, The First Omen, and Longlegs. IGN calls the film “a clever spin on holy horror,” in their review, promising a different and likely more grounded perspective on the themes at play.
Heretic is “devilishly entertaining,” Entertainment Weekly says. Adding that the film is sure to keep you guessing.
