Tamayo Perry, best known for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean, died on Sunday afternoon while surfing in Hawaii.
According to Deadline, Perry, the professional lifeguard and surfer, was attacked on Sunday, confirmed by Honolulu’s Emergency Services in a press conference. He was pronounced dead by Paramedicsc on Malaekahana Beach, Oahu, after being taken to shore by jet ski. He had sustained “more than one possible bite,” officials said.
Outside of his work on Pirates Of The Caribbean, he also held roles in Lost, Hawaii Five-o, and Blue Crush and did stunts in several other projects. Perry was better known locally as a surfer and one of the lifeguards in the Ocean Safety Department.
According to Dateline, “Tamayo Perry was a lifeguard loved by all,” said Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety Chief Kurt Lager. “He is well known on the North Shore, a professional surfer known around the world. Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more. Our condolences go out to Tamayo’s family and the whole lifeguard ohana.”
According to The Guardian, despite the disproportionate media attention, last year there were only 69 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide. Of those, only 10 of those attacks were fatal.
