Tyrese Gibson, best known for playing “Roman” in the Fast & Furious franchise, is ready to reprise his role as Simon Stroud, an FBI agent in Morbius (2022). In the first film, Stroud is equipped with a high-tech weapon system arm, making him a strong opponent to Michael Morbius (Jared Leto). Gibson reported feeling very excited about breaking into superhero action for the first time in his career.
Despite the enthusiasm, the final cut saw Stroud’s role drastically diminished, including several scenes with Strod’s arm in use. “I definitely did a lot of scenes that was chopped out of the movie. I had a full-on fight, and brawl, with the villain, Matt Smith. I had a full-on fight scene with Matt Smith in London, where we filmed at a park, and it was crazy,” Gibson said. Gibson reported feeling disappointed that his work and character couldn’t shine.
Morbius held the title for worst comic book movie ever made until Madame Web’s release and only brought in $167.5 million worldwide, according to Comicbook. This performance record might hinder Gibson’s chance to return to the franchise completely.
Gibson holds a tree-picture contract with Sony, according to Comicbook, so even if Stroud can’t return in the Morbius story, this will not be the last time a Spider-Man spin-off sees Tyrese Gibson or Stroud.
