Ryan Gosling’s action comedy The Fall Guy received an overwhelmingly positive audience reception at its SXSW debut. After its premiere, many have taken to social media to share their love for Gosling and Emily Blunt’s performances and its tribute to stunt work.
For the most part, audiences have praised the movie as a wonderful combination of action and comedy. Knight Light co-host Frederick Nuti said the film was “made for movie lovers” with plenty of references and “a huge massive tip to the hat to the stunt teams who make these movies possible.“ Collider editor-in-chief Steven Weintraub concurred and called it “a love letter to the stunt community, the people who make movies.“
The movie focuses on action stuntman Colt Steavers (Ryan Gosling) who works with his ex-girlfriend Jody Moreno to help find their lead actor Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Unfortunately, Steavers discovers that Ryder has been killed after being caught in a web of crime. Now being hunted by the people who killed Ryder, Steavers must apply his stunt knowledge to survive and save Moreno and her movie.
Director David Leitch pulled most of his experience as a stunt performer to help this story truly come to life. He used a combination of action and comedy in his films, including John Wick and Deadpool 2. Here, his endeavors seemed to have been reignited through the film and the chemistry between the two actors.
The Fall Guy is set for a March 22nd, 2024 release date.
