Topping this week’s Malaga Film Festival was Isaki Lacuesta’s Saturn Return (Segundo Premio), taking home the awards for Best Picture, Best Director (Lacuesta with co-director Pol Rodríguez), and Best Editing (Javi Frutos). The film is a biopic parody, narrating the creation of Spanish indie rock group Los Planetas’ third and final album. 

Winning Best Ibero-American Picture is Christopher Zalla’s Radical; at Sundance, the film was deemed a “conventional tearjerker about an inspiring teacher…[with] a terrific ensemble.”

Taking home the Special Jury Award is Celia Rico’s Little Loves (Los pequeños amores). The film follows a daughter-mother relationship, a theme seen before in Rico’s work Journey to My Mother’s Room, and Adriana Ozores’ role as the mother in Little Loves won her the award for Best Supporting Actress.

Another major winner at Malaga’s Film Festival was Álex Montoya’s family drama La Casa, which won the awards for Best Screenplay, Best Score, and the festival’s Audience Award.

Two actors shared the award for Best Actor, Joaquín Furriel for Sebastián Borensztein’s Rest in Peace and Luis Zahera for Pau Durà’s Pájaros.
