Shawn Levy, the director of the upcoming Deadpool 3, refuses to say anything about his movie. Deadline tried to interview the Adam Project and Free Guy filmmaker about his upcoming directorial reunion with Ryan Reynolds at the Directors Guild of America’s awards, but Levy declined to share. “I so cherish my friendship with Ryan Reynolds and it would be so sad if it ended in murder. And if I answered you with anything Deadpool related, it would end with my untimely death, and that would be so sad.”
Deadpool 3 is still shrouded in a veil (or rather, mask) of secrecy—even the final title is a secret. All that is known is that it will feature the first cinematic team-up of Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, in his first return to the character since his death in 2017’s Logan. Now set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or rather, the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse, after Disney’s 2019 buyout of 21st Century Fox, fans have speculated that Deadpool 3 will act as a love letter to the old X-Men franchise in the same way that Spider-Man: No Way Home celebrated past iterations of the webbed warrior.
While this is yet to be confirmed, one other pre-MCU Marvel star is confirmed to return: Jennifer Garner’s Elektra from 2003’s Daredevil and its 2005 spinoff Elektra. Since Garner’s Marvel movies were never considered a part of the X-Men film canon, it seems likely that the film will reach from all corners of Comic Book Film history to form its story.
Deadpool 3 looks to be a treat for longtime fans as it not only marks the return of Jackman’s Wolverine, but the first time he has worn his iconic yellow and blue comic book costume on the big screen. Additionally, the film is set to include the character of Dogpool, the “Merc with a Bark” who even has his own Instagram page.
The long-awaited Deadpool 3 trailer is rumored to premiere during this year’s Super Bowl game. When asked to confirm, Levy deflected “I’ve heard that [rumor] too.” While it remains to be seen if the trailer will premiere during the Big Game, the film will open in theaters on July 26th.
