Robert Eggers, known for The Witch and The Lighthouse, has been working on a remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film, Nosferatu. Though production on the remake has faced many obstacles, a first-look photo (provided by Empire Magazine) has been revealed, confirming that the film is finally a reality. This new photo does not feature the titular character, but it does show viewers a harrowing image of Count Orlok’s shadowy clawed hand over Lily-Rose Depp’s fear-stricken face.
Eggers commented to Empire Magazine, “It’s a scary film. It’s a horror movie. It’s a Gothic horror movie…And I do think that there hasn’t been an old-school Gothic movie that’s actually been scary in a while. And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case.”
Eggers’ revival of the classic silent film will star Lily Rose-Depp as Ellen and Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlak. The new feature will also feature Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe.
Commenting on Skarsgård’s performance, Eggers stated the following: “I’ll say that Bill has so transformed, I’m fearful that he might not get the credit that he deserves… He felt like honoring who had come before him. It’s all very subtle.”
For those interested in viewing the film, it is set to hit theaters in Christmas 2024.
