Indian blockbuster Gadar 2, starring Sunny Deol, could see a part 3 and even a spinoff series if the story is right, sources say.
The original Gadar, which came out in 2001, was a smash hit in India at the time. The third installment of the possible trilogy could be even bigger than the other two, should it be made.
“People are dancing in the aisles while the songs are on, tickets are being sold in black, which has not happened, which I think in some 20-30 years ever since the advent of the multiplexes,” said Shariq Patel, chief business officer of Zee Studios, Gadar’s production company, “It’s a crazy, crazy phenomenon, it’s just mind boggling.”
Between the merger between Zee Studios and Sony and Gadar 2’s success, Patel says that the studio is now looking to greenlight multiple films and create brands and labels for an arthouse, allowing for films made in Punjabi and other south Indian languages to be made through the studio.
“Within the next two, three years if we continue making films, which is meant for that single-screen and making it unabashedly and making it for them – rather than being apologetic about it, that has to stop. We all have been part of this problem. We’ve created this issue for ourselves by being shy about it,” Patel said.
