The videogame retail company, GameStop, has been left in a bad and dwindling state as more and more players have begun purchasing their games digitally or having their copies shipped to their door via online shopping. The company tried to offset losses by selling more physical merchandise but didn’t see any markable success. In recent years GameStop has seen massive layoffs and several store closings.
When Reddit users performed a short squeeze on the floundering company in 2021, bumping the stock from a minuscule share price and into the hundreds, those who sold in time managed to make off with well-lined pockets, while those who didn’t – including some severe institutional investors – lost a lot of money. The whole thing rippled in a domino effect across the financial world, with politicians and regulators stepping in to investigate.
As a part of their 2023 slate, Sony has announced a new movie titled Dumb Money which is centered around the GameStop debacle and set to release October 20th, 2023. The film will star notable names such as Seth Rogen, Paul Dano, and Nick Offerman. No images for the movie have been released, but given the release date, we’ll likely be seeing the first trailer early this summer.
With no detailed information, it’s unclear what tone the movie will take. It’s been suggested that Dumb Money may take after David Fincher’s The Social Network, as the author who wrote the inspirational book for Fincher’s film also wrote the book that inspired Dumb Money.
