James Cameron’s highly anticipated follow-up to Avatar was released 13 years after the original debuted. Avatar: The Way of Water, starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephan Lang, and Kate Winslet, was released on December 16. The film brought in $53 million from its initial Thursday/Friday debut, finishing the weekend with $134 million, just missing Disney’s forecast of $150 million. However, the film will play in theaters for a long time and will likely shore up any missed projections over time, much like the original Avatar did.
Wakanda Forever slipped to third place this weekend, being outpaced by Avatar and Violent Night, which has brought in nearly $35 million since its release and is projected to earn more than $50 million.
The other big hitters this week included Searchlight Pictures The Menu, which has remained in the top ten since its release and has earned $32 million overall. In addition, Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans made a respectable $750k over the weekend, with an overall total of $8.5 million since its release.
