Olivia Newton-John, famous singer and actress, has died today after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer. Her husband, John Easterling, confirmed she died peacefully at her ranch in southern California Monday morning surrounded by friends and family.
Olivia had battled breast cancer for thirty years, though a specific cause of death was not given. A source told TMZ, “After a 30-year cancer journey, she lost her battle to metastatic breast cancer.”
She had big songs like “If Not for You” in 1971, and in 1973 “Let Me Be There.” She followed that up with “Have You Never Been Mellow,” which was a huge hit.
Her big break came in 1978 when she starred alongside John Travolta in Grease, her role as Sandy shot her into superstardom. Some of her songs from the movie, “You’re the One that I Want,” “Summer Nights,” and “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” were also huge hits.
She followed that up with a second film, Xanadu, and her biggest hit would come in 1981. Her song “Physical” stayed at #1 for 10 weeks, breaking records.
She married Matt Lattanzi in 1984 and had a child, Chloe Rose in 1986. They divorced in 1995. She married John Easterling in 2008.
Olivia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 and went into remission, but it came back in 2013. It went back into remission but returned in 2017.
John Travolta posted a sweet tribute to Olivia, “My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!”
