Very little is known about Sony’s take on the mistress of the multiverse, however it has recently been confirmed that Emma Roberts is set to play the titular role Madame Web. Created by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr., Madame Web’s first appearance was in The Amazing Spider-Man #210, which was released in November 1980. Known initially as Cassandra Webb, her usual depiction is as an elderly blind woman suffering from a chronic degenerative neuromuscular disease that makes it difficult for her to move, talk, or even breathe, and as such, she’s connected to a life support system that looks like a spider web.
The clairvoyant character has precognitive abilities and has given help to Spider-Man in finding a kidnapping victim. In more recent adaptations, such as the video game Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions she is seen as a guardian of the infinite multiverse of other Spider-Men and Spider-Women. Whether or not that will be an main focal point of the film is not known, but more information on the film is expected to come out as more decisions are made about it.
From what we do know, Dakota Johnson is starring, alongside Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeney with Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced and Tahar Rahim. SJ Clarkson’s at the helm of the picture, with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless behind the pen of the most recent draft of the script. Madame Web is currently scheduled to arrive in July 2023.
