Director Andy Landen’s Sequoia is a film about romance, and a film about suicide. The film is set to premiere at South by Southwest on March 9th, and twitchfilm describes it as “one of the standout titles on the SXSW Narrative Spotlight lineup.”
SXSW provides a cheery description of Seqoia:
A very lively woman with a very deadly cancer visits a national park with the intention of ending her life there– but her suicide plans are continually thwarted, not least of all by her family, which finds itself unamused with her death wish.
The “lively” woman in question is played Aly Michalka, who’s probably best known for her appearances on the Disney Channel in things like Phil of the Future and Now You See It…. Michalka, much like other Disney alumni like Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens seems to be attempting to move past her pre-teen friendly work, given Sequoia somewhat challenging subject matter.
Other cast members include Dustin Milligan as a young man with whom Michalka’s character strikes up a romance, along with comedian Demetri Martin (Taking Woodstock), Todd Lowe, Sophi Bairley, Joey Lauren Adams, and Lou Diamond Phillips.
Based on this trailer, Sequoia looks to be odd, funny, and of course sad.
