Netflix continues its recent activities in South Korea with the film Okja. Their previous collaborations include Netflix Originals Good Morning Call and White Nights. Okja is about a Korean girl that must go up against a large corporation to save her best friend, who just happens to be a giant beast named Okja. The film is an international collaboration, and Netflix has sunk $50 million into the project.
Okja will be directed by Korean director Bong Joon-ho and is set to star Hollywood hotshots like Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhall, Lily Collins, Paul Dano, and Steven Yeun, but the lead will be a Korean star, Awn Seo-hyun.
According to Variety, Netflix has announced that the film will have theatrical releases, both in South Korea and the US, along with Netflix’s typical online premiere. The releases in the US are said to be limited day and location releases, but no other information has been divulged on the matter. After the theatrical releases, Okja will debut on Netflix in over 190 countries on June 28, 2017.
