Bloody Disgusting exclusively reports that Lionsgate is hard at work on a new Saw movie, though there has been no official announcement at this time. According to Bloody Disgusting, some sources say the next film could be a reboot of the series, or it could just be Saw 8. It is also unknown if Tobin Bell will return to once again voice the iconic serial killer.
From 2004 to 2010, the Saw series dominated the U.S. box office on Halloween weekend. All seven films opened in 3rd place or higher, with Saw II-IV and Saw 3D opening at #1. The series at first followed the Jigsaw Killer, John Kramer (Bell), infamous for using a variety of creative and elaborate traps to kill his victims. After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, Kramer went after people who he felt were wasting their lives. Kramer would place his victims in traps relevant to their inner demons. These traps were (supposed to be) escapable, but usually at great physical or psychological cost to the victim. After Kramer’s death at the end of Saw III, later films followed the work of his successors as they carried out his remaining traps while trying to stay a step ahead of both the police and each other. Tobin Bell reprised his role as Kramer through a series of audio recordings explaining each of the traps.
In recent years, the Paranormal Activity franchise has taken over the Halloween weekend throne from Saw. The first Paranormal Activity opened at #1 in 2009 ahead of Saw VI. With so little to go on, it is difficult to predict if fans are ready to return to the series after a three-year-and-counting hiatus, especially if Bell does not return.
